Brace yourself Gen Xers
A warning to all Gen Xers.
Don’t read this.
May induce an entirely rational urge to inflict pain and suffering on your cocky and shameless 20-something coworkers.
The latest issue of FORTUNE magazine has a cover story on Generation Y in the workplace ("You raised them. Now manage them"). Among the lowlights:
— seems 20-somethings are bringing their parents to job interviews (What are my key strengths. I think I’ll let my mom handle that one).
— 20-somethings are bringing their parents to their first day on the job. Says one parent — "I took her to kindergarten and now I’m here for her first day of work". (No word on whether she also packed a lunch for her little princess).
— they have a tough time working solo (Go, team, go!!!)
— they need constant praise and recogntion. Don’t ever, ever, ever forget their birthday or they just might quit and go live with mom and dad (Gold stars and ribbons for everyone!)
— they have a tough time making decisions (Two choices is one choice too many. Can I call my mom? Oh wait, she’s sitting right here with me in my cubicle.)
Final word goes to a generational consultant and should serve as a warning for any GenXer moving up the org chart into management ranks. "This is the most high-maintenace workforce in the history of the world."
